MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 30, 2023) – Xcel Energy invites customers to join employees and their friends and families on September 8 and 9 for its 13th annual Day of Service, an opportunity to give back to their communities.
Day of Service was created as a tribute to the victims, survivors and first responders of 9/11, as well as all those who work to keep communities and the country safe. The annual volunteer event provides an opportunity for Xcel Energy and members of the community to come together and contribute to projects that benefit local nonprofits.
“We show our commitment to our communities every day, working hard to ensure they have the safe, reliable energy they depend on,” said Chris Clark, president of Xcel Energy–Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. “This is our opportunity to take that commitment one step further. We ask members of the community to join us in meaningful work that builds up their neighbors and improves their environment.”
Volunteers can sign up now for 60 nonprofit projects across the state. Many are based in the Twin Cities metro area, with other opportunities near Faribault, Mankato, Monticello, Moorhead, and Red Wing. The list includes both indoor and outdoor projects, from packing meals and repairing homes for families to cleaning up nature trails and planting trees. People of all ages, skill levels and abilities can contribute.
Xcel Energy’s Day of Service has been an annual tradition since 2010 and is the company’s largest volunteer effort. Last year, nearly 3,000 employees, contractors, friends, family, retirees and customers across the eight states Xcel Energy serves contributed 9,300 hours of volunteer work. Their efforts benefited over 100 nonprofits and generated an economic impact of $280,000.
Among other accomplishments, volunteers:
- Packed 250,000 meals
- Assembled 2,300 hygiene kits
- Planted over 500 trees and native plants
- Cleaned up and treated five acres of land
- Picked up 250 bags of trash
