CARLSBAD, New Mexico (Dec. 5, 2019) – The Xcel Energy Foundation has awarded $5,000 in grant funding to the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad to support its work in preparing children and youth for the future workforce.
“The success of our communities is directly tied to our efforts to provide educational opportunities for our young people, create jobs, improve quality of life and in making sure no one is left behind in our progress,” said James Lackey, Xcel Energy manager for Community and Economic Development. “Our goal is to support the nonprofits that do so much to build up our communities.”
The Carlsbad grant is one of several across the region that have been made to support education programs that focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM. Nonprofits benefitting from the grants are providing hands-on learning opportunities that demonstrate the linkages between math and science, real-world applications, and future careers. Education grant recipients also focus on increasing the number of students entering and completing post-secondary education in STEM disciplines and pursuing STEM careers. reporter3@hobbsnews.com
The Xcel Energy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that awards charitable grants to nonprofit organizations and sponsors the volunteer programs of Xcel Energy and its subsidiaries. The majority of Xcel Energy Foundation funding comes from Xcel Energy shareholder dollars. In 2018, the Foundation granted nearly $4 million to nonprofit organizations for programs that aligned with its four focus areas of education, economic sustainability, environmental stewardship and access to arts and culture.
