AMARILLO, Texas (Sept. 10, 2026) — More than 160 Xcel Energy employees will volunteer Friday and Saturday as part of the company's annual Day of Service, supporting eight nonprofit organizations across Texas and New Mexico.
This year's Day of Service comes as the Xcel Energy Foundation celebrates 25 years of community investment. Since its founding in 2001, the Foundation has invested nearly $160 million across Xcel Energy's eight-state service area through nonprofit grants, employee giving and volunteer programs. Last year alone, nearly 3,000 employees and customers participated in Day of Service projects, contributing approximately 8,900 volunteer hours in communities across the region.
Local volunteer projects are part of a companywide effort, bringing employees together to support community organizations and strengthen the places they call home. This year, employees in Texas and New Mexico will contribute an estimated 650 volunteer hours to community projects.
"Our employees are proud to live and work in these communities, and Day of Service gives them an opportunity to roll up their sleeves and make a direct impact," said Stephanie Klapper, manager of Social Investments for Xcel Energy in Texas and New Mexico. "As we celebrate the Xcel Energy Foundation's 25th anniversary, we're reminded that strong communities are built not only through financial support, but also through the time, talent and dedication our employees share each year."
In Amarillo, volunteers will complete projects benefiting a variety of local organizations:
- ADVO Companies: Painting rooms at two residential homes.
- Amarillo SPCA: Building dog playground equipment, remodeling outdoor kennels, constructing cabinets for the cat sanctuary and completing outdoor cleanup projects.
- Amarillo Zoo & Sanctuary: Painting the primate and lemur building, cleaning exhibits, installing animal enrichment items, and removing weeds and debris.
- Downtown Women's Center: Painting hallways at the Meridian Apartments.
- High Plains Food Bank: Assisting in the organization's Garden and outside the Community Kitchen and Kids Café programs.
- Maverick Boys & Girls Club: Beautifying the garden area, painting one of their buildings and building benches.
- Ronald McDonald House Charities of Amarillo: Painting fencing around the property.
On Saturday, volunteers in New Mexico will support the Boys & Girls Club of Chaves and Lincoln Counties by cleaning and organizing a storage area and improving the basketball court.
Xcel Energy launched Day of Service in 2010 to honor the victims, survivors and first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Since then, employees, family members and community partners have contributed thousands of volunteer hours to nonprofit organizations across the company's service area, making Day of Service one of Xcel Energy's largest annual volunteer initiatives.
