Denver (April 8, 2024) – Xcel Energy crews are continuing to restore electric power to customers who were impacted by extreme winds over the weekend, with 90% of customers expected to have their power back on by tonight. More than 500 crew members are in the field, working through the night to inspect power lines, repair wind damage and restore service.

Outages that last into tomorrow are generally in the hardest hit areas of the Southwest Metro, Arvada and Boulder foothills, which sustained more damage from winds that gusted up to nearly 100 miles per hour. Customers can keep updated on the status of their outage on our outage map,

For the first time in Colorado, Xcel Energy conducted a public safety power shutoff, impacting 55,000 customers in Boulder, Gilpin, Larimer, Douglas, Broomfield and Jefferson Counties whose electric service was turned off Saturday as a public safety measure. More than 600 miles of lines were proactively de-energized. More than 100,000 additional outages were caused by damage due to the high winds. All lines are being patrolled with crews visually inspecting them before they are re-energized in order to ensure customer safety.

Customers who are still without power may want to unplug appliances containing electronic components, such as televisions, microwaves, and computers to prevent damage as power is being restored. Also, they should check for damages to their electric service mast, which is a pipe mounted to the house through which the electric service wires run. If there are damages to the mast, a licensed electrician will need to make repairs before service can be restored.

If anyone sees downed power lines, stay away and call 911.
