EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (May 23, 2018)– Xcel Energy is continuing a program to bring the economic, environmental and aesthetic benefits of LED streetlights to its communities.

Over several months, Xcel Energy and contract crews will begin replacing 2,200 decorative streetlights in the Hudson, Eau Claire and La Crosse areas. Xcel Energy’s massive project to upgrade company-owned, streetlights from high pressure sodium vapor to light-emitting diode started in 2016 when 25,000 cobra-head style lights were switched to LED lights. There is no cost to communities for the streetlight replacements.

LED streetlights use less electricity than HPSV streetlights and have a longer life which means fewer replacements, less maintenance and less expense. Communities could save 2 to 7 percent per light on their average monthly streetlight bill. They also cast a crisper, white light compared to HPSV streetlights.

HPSV streetlight technology has a light pattern that causes glare and light to spill up into the sky and away from the area to be lit. LED streetlights greatly reduce glare and focus the light directly on the area to be lit.
