MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (Oct. 2) – Xcel Energy today announces the launch of a new energy efficiency rebates in Minnesota for five types of clean water pumps between 1 and 200 horsepower. Clean water pumps are often used in municipal water applications as well as many types of business operations, including irrigation, circulation of hot and cold water in commercial buildings, and pressure boosting in apartment buildings.
The rebates are the result of a new standard announced by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) which will go into effect in January 2020. Pumps meeting the new standards are projected to reduce electricity consumption by about 30 billion kilowatt-hours in the next three decades, which is equivalent to the annual electricity use of 2.9 million U.S. households, saving customers up to a billion dollars collectively, according to the DOE. The standards will require the least-efficient 25 percent of pumps in today’s market to be redesigned to improve efficiency and reduce energy losses.
Xcel Energy is the first utility in the country to offer these rebates for both new and retrofitted pumps.
“With such a broad base of end-use purposes, this technology can provide facilities with a host of energy saving opportunities,” says Shari Kelley, Commercial Product Portfolio Manager. “Distributors file the rebates, saving customers time and streamlining the process.”
The standards reflect efficiency levels that were agreed to by manufacturers, efficiency advocates, pump users, and utilities as part of a negotiated rulemaking, and build on standards established in the European Union.
Example of rebate savings on a clean water pump project
- Clean water pump type: End suction close coupled (ESCC)
- Horsepower: 25
- Control strategy: Constant to variable, non-vertical pump 3600 RPM
- PEI rating: .48
- Xcel Energy Rebate: $1,875
These rebates are currently offered only to Minnesota’s Xcel Energy customers. Colorado will be launching a clean water pump rebate in late 2019. For more detailed information on Minnesota’s Clean Water Pumps program, participating distributors and which pumps qualify for these rebates.
