MINNEAPOLIS (July 28, 2025) — Xcel Energy crews have returned electric service to more than 85% of the customers who lost power during last night’s severe storms as restoration efforts continue.
The Sunday night storm brought lightning, heavy rain, hail and winds over 60 miles per hour that damaged electric infrastructure and caused outages for nearly 80,000 customers across Minnesota, primarily in the Twin Cities metro. As of early Monday afternoon, Xcel Energy crews had restored service to about 70,000 customers.
More than 1,000 employees and contractors are currently in the field assessing the widespread damage and working to safely and quickly restore power, and hundreds more will join them by tomorrow morning. Crews prioritize the largest outages first to restore power to as many people as possible early on. The very large number of individual outages affecting a few customers each have led to longer restoration estimates for some customers. Xcel Energy knows losing power is difficult and the company thanks customers for their patience and support of its crews. Visit the Outage Map for updated outage details throughout the day.
The company is preparing for additional storms expected in Minnesota this evening. For safety, Xcel Energy asks everyone to stay away from downed or sagging power lines. Always assume an electric line, even one on the ground, is energized and dangerous. Never touch or move a downed power line; instead, leave the area and report it immediately by calling 1-800-895-1999.
Report an outage or get updates
Customers can help Xcel Energy get a jump on power restoration by reporting outages. To report an outage:
- Use the Xcel Energy mobile app
- Visit www.xcelenergy.com/out
- Text OUT to 98936
- Call 1-800-895-1999 and follow the automated prompts
Customers can also access the most recent updates about an outage using the mobile app or by visiting the Outage Map, which displays the number of customers out and the anticipated restoration time if available.
Those who are experiencing outages should check for damage to their mast, which is the electric service connection to their home or business. If the mast is damaged, a licensed electrician must make repairs and it must be inspected before service can be restored. See the Outage Checklist for more information.
